The storage space of the removable storage device is used to expand the hard disk’s cache. This is particularly beneficial for systems that have little memory. In addition, you can only use ReadyBoost if your laptop uses a mechanical hard drive (HDD).

In order to be able to use ReadyBoost, the removable disk must have at least 500 megabytes of storage capacity. To activate the function, proceed as follows:

Insert the USB stick or memory card into the computer and open the file explorer. To do this, click with the right mouse button on the Windows symbol at the bottom left and choose "Explorer"Find the removable disk in the list on the left, right-click the icon and select in the menu "characteristics"Click the tab above "ReadyBoost". If you can use the function, follow the instructions on the screen.

2. Have the hard disk cleaned up automatically

Windows 10 offers the option to automatically free up space. This means that users no longer have to empty the trash themselves or delete temporary files by hand. Activate the option for this "Storage optimization". This can be found in the settings. To access the function, press the Windows key and tap "Storage optimization" a. The menu should now appear for calling. Otherwise proceed as follows:

How to enable automatic memory optimization

Press the Windows key or click the Windows icon in the system tray (usually in the lower left corner). Press the gear icon, this will open Windows Settings. Click "system"Find the menu "Storage". Click on it and Windows will give you the option "Storage optimization". Activate the setting.

in the menu "Change the automatic freeing of space" you can set which files Windows should delete and when.

Alternatively, you can click on "Free up space now"to delete certain files immediately. Caution: You may find files from the previous Windows version there. These can take up several gigabytes of memory. Windows keeps these files for some time so users can revert to the previous version. Only delete these files if you want to keep the current Windows version.

3. Defragment the hard disk

To reduce the access time to files, it helps to defragment the hard disk. The system rearranges data blocks. As a result, related but fragmented files are put back together again. The computer therefore finds the files in one place and not spread over several – this reduces the access time.

Defragmenting a drive is only advisable for HDDs. You should avoid it with so-called SSDs. Read more about SSDs here. To defragment your drive in Windows 10, do the following:

Press the Windows key or click the Windows icon in the system tray (usually at the bottom left). Press the gear icon, this will open Windows settings. Type in the search box above "Defragment" a. The option appears: "Defragment and optimize drives". Click on it, the system will now show all connected drives. The type (HDD or SSD) can also be seen. With the option "Optimize", you can defragment it immediately. In Settings you can also specify whether and how often a drive "optimized" shall be.

4. Reduce visual effects

Another option: reduce the graphic effects of Windows. This can help if the system reacts slowly – for example, if you click something or move a window. That reports "heise online". To reduce the visual effects, do the following:

Press the "Windows key" and "R."The window opens "To run". Type the command here "Sysdm.cpl" The window opens "System properties". Click the tab above "Extended".Under the point "power" click on "Settings".

Windows offers the options here to optimize the visual effects for display or performance. You can also turn effects on or off yourself.

5. End the autostart programs

If the laptop drives its owner crazy with a slow Windows start, it can make sense to sort out automatically loading programs when the system starts. That works over the "Autostart". To manage startup programs, proceed as follows:

Press Ctrl-Shift-Escape to bring up the Task Manager. Alternatively, you can press Ctrl + Alt + Ent and then "Task manager" Click on the tab above "Autostart"Windows programs that start at system startup are listed here. To disable it, select the program you want and click on the bottom right "Deactivate". Many applications from the Office package to the packing program to the PDF tool certainly do not always have to start immediately with Windows. You can confidently click with the right mouse button on the corresponding entry "Disabled" be set.

At Aldi Nord and Süd there will be some technology offers again from the end of August – for example a desktop PC and two notebooks. We explain what they’re good at in a quick check.

Discounters regularly lure with new technology offers at particularly low prices. From August 27, the discounter Aldi Nord and Süd will be offering a Medion vacuum robot for less than 200 euros. Read here whether the offer is worthwhile.

There are also two tablets for less than 200 euros. You can find the quick check here. In addition, the two Aldis will also offer a desktop PC and two notebooks. A quick check shows: These offers are not that bad after all.

Akoya P66089: Stable desktop PC with a weakness

The desktop PC is called Medion Akoya P66089 at Aldi Nord and costs around 678 euros with a reduction in VAT. At Aldi Süd it is listed as Akoya S71. For the price, users receive a computer with an i5-10400: an Intel six-core processor of the current tenth generation with up to 2.9 gigahertz (GHz) performance. Eight GB of RAM are installed, the hard drive is an SSD and has 512 GB. The graphics card is a Geforce GTX 1650. The desktop computer also has WLAN capabilities. A special feature of the device: the front panel can be removed and replaced with another motif. Windows 10 Home is installed as the operating system.

Medion itself markets Akoya P66089 as a "fast performance PC". In fact, users shouldn’t have any performance problems with the equipment in almost any application. The computer can shine above all with the processor and the SSD. This type of hard drive is particularly fast, you can read more about it here. Eight GB of RAM is a bit small for video editing, but RAM can be easily upgraded and RAM sticks start at around 30 euros.

The Geforce GTX 1650 is an entry-level card that, according to Medion, is suitable for the "one or the other casual game" should be enough. However, this is undersold, because according to benchmark tests by "notebookcheck.net" With the GTX 1650 you can also get AAA titles like "Red Dead Redemption 2", "Anno 1800" or "FIFA 20" Play well on at least low or medium graphics settings. However, if you want to install a better card, you will run into a problem: the Akoya P66089’s power supply is loud "Computerbilde.de" quite weak at 250 watts. For more powerful cards like the RTX 2060, users must first invest in a better power supply. The "PC magazine" In his check, however, sums up: "In terms of price / performance, the Medion PC is overall good."

Akoya S15447: A portable all-rounder

Those who prefer a portable device can also take a look at the two notebook offers. Aldi Süd has the Medion Akoya S15447 for around 775 euros. The device has a 15.6-inch full HD screen, 16 gigabytes of RAM and a 512 GB SSD. The processor is a current Intel i7 with 1.8 GHz performance. A webcam with a microphone is also installed. The battery should last about six and a half hours, the weight Medion mentions 1.78 kilos. Windows 10 Home is installed as the operating system.

If you are looking for a mobile computer to play with, you shouldn’t use the Akoya S15447. Because the built-in Intel UHD graphics card has problems with older AAA titles to play them smoothly even with low graphics settings. The equipment should be more than sufficient for everything else. "Chip.de" sums up for example: "The Medion Akoya S15447 is a powerful notebook and, considering the components used, is by no means overpriced at a good 775 euros." The PC magazine judges similar and summarizes that at most the Lenovo ThinkPad E14 "cheaper and even provided with a more comfortable form factor".

Akoya E15302: Notebook for less than 600 euros

The Medion Akoya E15302 is listed online at Aldi Süd for 599 euros and online at Aldi Nord for 581 euros. The device also has a 15.6-inch full HD screen, 16 GB of RAM and a 512 GB SSD as well as a webcam and microphone. The battery should last about eight hours, at 1.84 kilos, the device is also a little heavier than the Akoya S15447. The processor is an AMD Ryzen 5 3500 U – a four-core chip from 2019. The Vega 8 serves as the graphics chip. Windows 10 Home is installed as the operating system.

The Akoya E15302 is rather unsuitable for playing current AAA titles because of its graphics chip like the Akoya S15447 – even if the Vega 8 delivers better results than its Intel UHD competitor in the benchmark test. If you still want to gamble with the Akoya E15302, you should switch to low graphics settings for many top titles and be prepared for stuttering.

Otherwise, the Akoya E15302 should do well in everyday use. "Computerbild.de" certified the device in a test from April 2020 "high pace of work" and praises the anti-glare display. According to the experts, the device shows "Colors a little pale". The few connections are also criticized. The "PC magazine" summarizes in his check: "If we start looking for the same specs, no significantly cheaper offer that would be comparable can be found on price comparisons"

Microsoft has updated its Edge browser and channeled it onto the Windows computer via a system update. Many users are annoyed because the software cannot be uninstalled. We’ll show you how to at least banish the browser underground.

How to change the browser in Windows 10
Photo series with 6 pictures

Microsoft has been installing the new version of its own Edge browser with regular updates on Windows 10 computers for private users since the beginning of May. The new edition of the previously unpopular browser will then appear in the system tray with a new logo. But not only that. The program nests deep in the system and draws users’ attention to itself in various ways.

Complaints about the aggressive behavior of Chromium Edge are mounting in the community. Apparently Microsoft is leaving no stone unturned to get its browser off to a good start.

Installation process cannot be canceled

After installing the update, the user is greeted by a full-screen hint to the new Edge browser, which cannot be clicked away. This forces you to continue the process. After several clicks, the setup is complete and Chromium Edge becomes a constant companion.

This cannot even be prevented via the task manager, as some users had to find out. Anyone who tries to stall the installation process will still experience the Chromium Edge nestling in the system tray, creating a desktop shortcut and taking over the bookmarks from the other browsers without being asked. The browser data will only be deleted afterwards if the user objects to the import.

Chromium Edge cannot be deleted after the update. However, you can largely ban the browser from the field of vision and prevent it from starting automatically when a file is opened.

How can I remove the Edge icon from the system tray?

If you are confused or simply annoyed by the new icon in your system tray, you can simply remove it: Right-click the icon with the mouse to open a menu selection from below. You will find the selection next to the pin icon "Detach from the taskbar". Select with a left mouse click and the Edge symbol will disappear from your system tray.

Now the Microsoft Edge browser can only be found in the menu. If you want to add it to the taskbar again later, all you need to do is right-click on the app in the menu. "More" and subsequently "Pin to the system tray" choose.

The desktop shortcut can also be deleted with a right click.
